London in the time of Elizabeth 1st - a place of secrets and intrigue, overseas wars and plague. This is the London of John Donne - poet, lover, soldier, wit, and eventual cleric. A riotous youth culminating in an unwise seduction, sees Donne, a stubborn Catholic, who refuses to sign the Oath of Allegiance, sent off to the wars. On his return he again falls in love unwisely. But this time he will not be distracted.
